Jason Robert Brown opens his two-person musical with this devastating solo. Cathy sits alone at the end of her marriage reading a farewell note from her husband Jamie. The song demands immense emotional vulnerability right out of the gate since the audience has no prior context for their relationship. It requires the singer to ground themselves immediately and build an arc of betrayal and heartbreak that anchors the entire rest of the show.
🎹 Thoughts From the Piano Bench: I hope this gets a few downloads because I actually practiced that string interlude 😤. Especially playing through this by myself and having to audiate the voice part, this is a song that the tempo can pick up a couple clicks if you're not focused on 'living in it'. Yes the recurring L5Y motive is very effective, but I just love love love those tense chord progressions during the bridge. In a live situation there are a couple of balance issues to be aware of, be careful for example in the second verse as the piano texture thickens but the voice stays in that bottom-of-the-staff register, easy for some words to get swallowed up.
