Haydn, Franz Joseph - Six English Canzonettas, Hob.XXVIa:27 - A Pastoral Song (AM)
A custom streaming practice/rehearsal piano track for A Pastoral Song
from Six English Canzonettas,
by Franz Joseph Haydn.
Written in 1794 during his time in London, Haydn set this beautiful text by Scottish poet Anne Hunter to create an absolute gem of the English classical repertoire. The speaker is lamenting the absence of her beloved, yet the music retains some classical lightness and elegance rather than sinking into total despair. I'll admit I don't think it's as captivating as some of Haydn's other output/arias and oratorios, but it is neat to play Haydn songs that were actually written for piano rather than an orchestral reduction as with most of his vocal works.
