Written in 1957, Six Elizabethan Songs was one of Dominick Argento's breakthrough works and perfectly showcases his ability to set classic poetry to uniquely fresh and modern textures. The text for "Spring" comes from Thomas Nashe and paints a delightfully (almost manic?) picture of the changing seasons complete with bird calls and bursting blooms.
🎹 Thoughts From the Bench: I love this set, but they're tricky to get exactly how you'd like them. Follow along looking directly at the piano part once - look at how specific Argento is about what notes to lengthen. Notice the times that it lines up with what you are singing, versus times when we are each independent; can impact the balance between us at times!
