Set to a text by Johann Ludwig Uhland, Brahms composed "Sonntag" in 1858. It quickly became one of his most popular vocal works thanks to its undeniable and effortless charm. The song captures the sweet, almost naive longing of a young person who hasn't seen their crush all week and can only catch a glimpse of them outside of Sunday church. It carries the gentle and lilting character of a German folk song, keeping the emotional weight bright, optimistic, and deeply endearing.

🎹 Thoughts From the Piano Bench: As far as Brahms go this is pretty straightforward, two quick verses and we're out. Make sure that repeated phrases have dynamic contrasts (echo guestures) and that the 2nd verse has a little extra something something to indicate to the audience a sense of finality.
