Written in 1989 for the animated film and later adapted for the 2008 Broadway stage production, this piece fundamentally changed the landscape of modern musical theater. Howard Ashman and Alan Menken brought the structure of a classic Broadway "I Want" song to feature animation, giving Ariel a deeply human and urgent desire to explore a world she barely understands. The lyrics are conversational and peppered with pauses as she searches for the right human words. This gives the performer a good amount of freedom to act through the song rather than just singing pretty phrases.
🎹 Thoughts From the Bench: Pacing is everything when we collaborate on this one, you'll see me try and pace through some of the spoken interjections - apologies if you want more time or want to imbue some of Ariel's lines with more urgency, I picked a middle-of-the-road amount of time! That'll be the things you can tweak with your live pianist. I think one of the reasons this song is so popular with such a wide range of ages is that it can play in a bunch of different directions; are you earnestly yearning? Do you lean into the comedy of the fish-out-of-water (ha) lyricism? Are you restless? Resentful? Ingénue? It's a great song to explore, which is why it is a great tune for younger singers earlier in the journey of emoting while performing as well.
