Meredith Willson originally penned an early version of this tune for an unproduced show before recycling it into The Music Man in 1957, where it acts as the emotional turning point for Marian Paroo as she confesses her change in feelings towards Harold, cementing its status as a cornerstone of golden age musical theater repertoire.
🎹 Thoughts From the Bench: As a pianist I am giving some attention to all the inner voice movement in the piano - I love these rich ballads where the original full orchestration includes so much lugubrious chromaticism (lugubrious chromaticism, new band name, I call dibs). While yes I enjoy giving a little more motion to the B section, don't be in such a hurry that you don't take some emotional cues from the hints of sour dissonance in the piano - there's some good crunchy chords in there that you can use as inspiration for tension & release in your phrasing. Tons of places to dangle the audience and make them wait, I've shown some here but with your live pianist you can decide how extravagant you'd like to be! Enjoy.
