Clarke completed her setting of William Butler Yeats's famous poem in 1919, capturing the bittersweet nostalgia of a love lost to the foolishness of youth. While many composers like Benjamin Britten and Ivor Gurney tried their hands at this text, Clarke's version is distinctively beautiful in its simplicity. She leans into the traditional folk roots of the Irish text, providing a sparse and atmospheric texture that gives the singer incredible freedom to tell the story without being overpowered.
🎹 Thoughts From the Piano Bench: This is one of those songs that needs to be rhythmically & ensembally correct (of course), BUT without sounding like either of us is counting or really hammering out the metronome of it. Making our cross rhythms of triplets and slow duples still have flow rather than being to beat-y with the 2 against 3. My real secret is that I feel the first verse as in a broad flowy cut time, and then the second half where it's a tick slower I perceive in 4 for just a little more of a staid quality.
